Planning & Preparation
The teacher's plans reflect adequate understanding of the content, the students, and available resources. Instructional outcomes are suitable to students. Instruction and assessments are aligned to the goal (s).
Example: Library Orientation
At the beginning of each school year, I facilitate a Library Orientation for the 9th graders through their English classes. For four days, I teach them how the library works and how it can help them in high school. This example shows evidence of 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d, 1e, and 1f.

Day 1: Library Basics - staff, philosophy, procedures
- Library Rules Quiz - withing this lesson, students took a "quiz" to see learn about library procedures. Using Socrative, live results were shown on the screen as they answered each question, then I explained that particular procedure
- Scavenger Hunt - students work in pairs using iPads, QR codes, and a Google form to apply what they just learned
- Database Discovery - in small groups, students explore one of several databases and share it with the rest of the class
- Book Speed Dating - students "got to know" new books and check out at least one book by the end of the period
Throughout the four-day lesson,
- Students and teachers get to know each other through introductions and activities.
- I check for understanding at various intervals, using informal and formal assessments.
- I like to use Socrative because students are able to answer questions independently and give feedback about the lesson itself.
- Students use various resources to make meaning: chromebooks, iPads, Google Docs and Forms, online library catalog, and databases, as well as traditional books.
- Students learn and work individually, in pairs, and in small groups to accomplish learning goals.
